OWERRI—Imo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it apprehended 1,350 road traffic offenders for committing 1,411 offences this year.
The Sector Commander, Mr. Angus Ibezim, made the disclosure at the commencement of the ’ember-months’ road safety campaign in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of the state.
He further disclosed that the state recorded 84 reported road accidents last year, while 218 were injured and 57 died, adding that between January and October this year, 61 accidents were reported, while 113 persons were injured and 33 died.
Ibezim enjoined motorists to put their vehicles in good conditions, avoid drunk driving, maintain sensible speed limits and shun every form of dangerous driving and overtaking with a view to reducing the senseless loss of precious lives on the roads.
“One of the great challenges facing the Command is how to handle the state of mind of our drivers, especially with respect to overloading, over-speeding and reckless and dangerous driving, which are major causes of road accidents,†the Sector Commander said.
He called on the state government to rehabilitate the dilapidated road network and flood-ridden spots across the state.
Earlier in his address, the Unit Commander of Ngor Okpala, Mr. Fabian Ugwu, advised motorists plying the ever busy Owerri-Aba highway to drive cautiously and shun all forms of road traffic breaches to avoid mishap.
He also called for the provision of two towing trucks to the Corps to enable it remove with ease all broken down vehicles on the road.
