Abuja -Rotimi George-Taylor, the president Nigeria Boxing Federation has said that most secretaries of the National Sports Federations are redundant and has therefore urged the Sports Minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission, Engineer Sani Ndanusa to ensure henceforth they are given mandates.
Taylor who was speaking at a parley the minister had with Federation Chairmen and other stakeholders of sports in Abuja during the week said the secretaries are not proactive, stay idle in their offices and expect sponsors to come to them.
He said he believes that such mandate would push the secretaries to go the extra mile in the discharge of their responsibilities.
“We have nothing but executives as federations’ secretaries waiting for sponsors to bring funds to organise championships without initiating how revenue would be sourced for the development of sports.
“If these secretaries are given mandates, they would sit up and rise to their responsibilitiesâ€, he said while making contributions on how sports could be developed.
Others that made contributions at the parley advanced that some secretaries were responsible for the sudden withdrawal of corporate sponsors as they alleged that funds provided to sponsor championships were not judiciously expended.
“Many sponsors have withdrawn their sponsorship as they were not getting value for their money owing to improper utilisation of sponsorship funds. If these secretaries are made to properly account for fund provided by these corporate organisations, surely we will have proper developmentâ€, Dr Tunde Murahinyo of Nigeria Volleyball Federation said.
