By Yemisi Suleiman
About ninety hopefuls, most of whom were  university undergraduates, peultimate Thusday, thronged the Sleek Studio, Blommsbury Plaza, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja, venue of the search for Face of Sleek first regional screening, all gaily dressed to vie for a place among the 20 slots for the FCT.

The search aimed at selecting a brand ambassador for Sleek Nigeria, according to Ify Ugochukwu, MD of Sleek Hair Nigeria, is also aimed at upholding the essence of the African beauty. “We are looking for a lady with confidence, a sense of style and good skin. It doesn’t matter if she is fat or skinny, but we are looking for that singular feature that expresses the total outlook of the African woman.

It is about everything that makes you a woman, not just your facial beauty” she said.  Other criteria for the selection included grammar, total look, passion and intelligence.

After a rigorous screening session, judges made up of prolific designer, Dakova, Ify Ugochukwu – MD Sleek Hair, Douglas Nwokocha, top radio DJ at Rhythm FM-Abuja, Mrs Goziem Onuoha, Sleek Hair Franchisee in Abuja and Yemisi Suleiman of Vanguard trimmed the number of girls from about 90 to 23.
The 23 selected contestants with right balance of wit and charm, will move on to the semi-final screening stage scheduled to hold in Lagos.  For the losers, it was not all a bad day as two of the girls got free hair make-overs while others got free Sleek goodie bags. The regional screening moves to Enugu, Port Harcourt and Lagos next week.

The semi-final event will take place at The Coral Hall, Victoria Island on Saturday, November 14, 2009. Twenty contestants will get the opportunity to get to the next level – spending time with each other under the same roof for a maximum of two weeks, while they are put through quite intensive crash courses in etiquette, grooming and fashion by trained professionals.
