Ex-militant warns against derailing amnesty programme

By Samuel Oyadongha

Yenagoa — Ex-militant leader in Bayelsa State, Mr. Abogah Olali, a.k.a  Commander Area, has cautioned against destabilising the current amnesty programme in the Niger Delta.

Abogah warned in an interview in Yenagoa that the ex-warlord would resist any attempt by some persons to derail the programme of the Federal Government.

The repentant militant, who noted that he and his colleagues accepted the amnesty offer to allow for the development of the region, said President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had demonstrated commitment to the Niger Delta issues.

“We are again thanking Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, for the granting of amnesty. There is now peace in Bayelsa and the region.

“We want the amnesty programme to succeed and we will not allow some selfish people and detractors to destabilise the exercise,” said Abogah, who operated a camp in Akassa community in Brass Local Government Area.

He called on the state government to extend projects to rural communities to give the people a sense of belonging.

Also speaking, another ex-militant leader, Commander Lagos, said they were out of the creeks for good to live a normal life and called on the federal government to speed up the amnesty implementation programme to engage their followers in meaningful ventures.

The two repentant militants noted the contribution of Governor Timipre Sylva and the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Mr. Timi Alaibe, to the success of amnesty in Bayelsa state.

They also congratulated Mr. Alaibe, former NDDC Managing Director on his recent appointment by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as a substantive special adviser on Niger Delta.
