BENIN—THE Esogban of Benin Kingdom and Chairman of the Benin Forum, Chief David Edebiri, yesterday accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state of squandering billions of naira in the state in the last ten years.
According to him, the party’s criticism of Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s government is borne out of frustration.
Edebiri’s observation comes as a catholic priest in the state, Reverend Father Benedith Atafoh, declared that the coming of Oshiomhole as governor of the state has liberated the people from the stranglehold of godfathers.
Chief Edebiri, who spoke to Vanguard in an exclusive interview, said the people of the state would only accept criticism from other quarters and not the PDP, stressing that the rot inherited by Oshiomhole’s administration would not have been there if the PDP had given the people good governance.
He said PDP’s criticism was coming at a time the governor had already changed the face of Benin City in just one year in office which, according to him, is an indication that the PDP never meant well for the people.
His words:  “The PDP was here in the last ten years when the last two administrations raped this state of billions of naira, as had been established in the court and in the tribunal.
“They raped this state of billions of naira for their own personal aggrandizement. They used our money to go and develop countries that are already developed. So the PDP has no right to say whatever they are saying.
“Besides, whatever allegation they are making against the governor, they should prove it. What proof do they have to say contracts have been inflated? As a matter of fact, how many contracts have been awarded?
“They should wait to see whether these contracts will be like the ones awarded by the immediate past PDP government, when nobody knows how they were paid for the contracts. The contracts were awarded to fictitious companies that have no fax addresses.
“We are happy with what the young man is doing so far. We are happy that the psychological tension brought by the collection of illegal revenues, harassing of innocent people along the road, all those things have stopped.
“Look at Benin City today, every where has changed. And by time he finishes with Benin, he will move to other areas. So the PDP is not serious at all.â€
