FORMER Green Eagles defender, Yisa Sofoluwe has decried the growing call for the dismissal of the chief coach of the national team, Amodu Shaibu after qualifying the country for the 2010 World Cup.
In an exclusive chat with Vanguard Sport Sofoluwe who was nicknamed “Minister of defence†by the late sports commentator, Ernest Okonkwo said “as a coac
h, Amodu has performed and acquitted himself by qualifying us for the World Cup. Why push such a man aside now.†As far as he is concerned, results make a coach..
â€He did not lose a match throughout the qualifiers. “He has given us the World Cup ticket and you say such a coach should go?â€
When reminded that Amodu’s team had put Nigerians on edge, each time they played during the qualifiers, Sofoluwe said, “it’s the quality of players he had. If a coach has good players, he would have very little to do.â€|
Sofoluwe believes that some of the players in the national team have outlived their usefulness and should be dropped if the country must move forward in her quest for glory in football.
“My advice to the coach is that he should look around for new boys. There are a lot of players who are hungry for glory. I believe in the injection of new blood into the squad and those who can no longer cope, should be shown the way out.â€
Although he admires Kanu’s contributions to Nigerian football.
, Sofoluwe was not sympathetic to the skipper’s presence in the national team.
“Except they want to compensate him for what he has done for Nigerian football, I think Kanu is a surplus in the team right now.â€
He, however, remarked that there was nothing wrong with Kanu insisting on going to the world cup. “Yes, he can go to the World Cup.
We have seen it before where a player goes to the Mundial without seeing action. As a role model, Kanu can have a lot of influence on the players.†he said.
