Democracy demands professionalism of the military …. COAS

By Emeka Mamah

ZARIA — The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-General Abdulrahman Dam-bazau has said that the present democratic dispensation requires adequate professional knowledge of the military.

Dambazau also said that the military cannot mortgage discipline and expect to achieve its desired aims, pointing out that soldiers must show the highest discipline in the discharge of their constitutional roles.

He spoke at the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Army Corps of the Military Police Training Week in Zaria, Kaduna State, yesterday.

The theme of this year’s training week is, Repositioning Military Police for Enhanced Discipline in the Nigerian Army.

According to him, “no vision-oriented Army in the world can afford to mortgage discipline and expect to achieve its end state, which is professionalism.

“Our present political dispensation requires that we exhibit adequate professional knowledge, demonstrate undiluted professionalism and show high standard of discipline in the discharge of our constitutional roles.”
He then charged the corps of Military Police to discharge their duties diligently since the huge task of maintaining discipline in the Army rests on them.

“You are vested with the huge tasks of enforcing rules and regulations, maintaining discipline and effectively policing the Army.

“This is a job which would not earn you compliments from your superiors, peers or subordinates alike; yet it is a task that must be done.

“Consequently, you must maintain a standard that is beyond reproach in order to have the moral courage to check erring personnel,” Dambazau, who was formally in the Military Police Corps said.
