Akwaaba rates Emirates best airline in Africa

Emirates airline has     been voted the best airline into Africa at the 2009 Africa Travel Market award ceremony, a travel and tourism trade exhibition which kicked off at the Expo center of Eko hotel and suites in Lagos over the weekend.

One hundred judges drawn from among the different stakeholders groups in the aviation and hospitality industry voted in favour of Emirates, giving it the “Best Airline into Africa” at a colorful and well attended awards night graced by visitors from Nigeria and beyond.

The event which started off with an official opening ceremony by Emeka Anyaoku, former commonwealth secretary, had the former president of the Gambia, Sir Dawda Jawara as the special guest of honour, and other notable guests such as the executive governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke and his wife, Obioma, members of the diplomatic corps, delegates from different African countries amongst others. Paulos Legesse, Country Manger, Emirates Nigeria said: “We are delighted to receive this award from Africa Travel Market, which clearly reinforces our commitment to serve our customers better. For, us at Emirates, this a proof that Nigeria and indeed the whole of Africa acknow-ledges and appreciates our continuous drive to deliver high-quality service, even in these challenging times.”

He added: “We are very proud of the different products and services we offer especially our outstanding in-flight services delivered by an international crew drawn from over 140 nationalities; menus designed by leading chefs and complemented by the finest wines; an award-winning in-flight entertainment system; a modern and young aircraft fleet; and a rapidly-expanding network.”

Akwaaba, which is the only international travel expo recognized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in west Africa is also endorsed by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the NTDC and is recognized among the top five international events in West Africa. It is a platform that best represents the ideas of Business to Business (B2B) forum where businesses, operators, stakeholders and administrators in the travel and tourism industry meet to network, promote and market their various destinations as well as exchange ideas on new trends and celebrate the bounteousness of tourism.

Emirates was recently awarded the best First Class and the Best Middle Eastern Airline by the UK edition of Business Traveller magazine and has also boosted its impressive title collection by winning the “Best Middle East/African Airline” award from Business Traveller Asia-Pacific Other awards won by Emirates this year include: Best In-flight Entertainment from Skytrax Airline Excellence Awards 2009; Best Website in airline category from Travel d”Or 2009 Awards in France; Best Airline Website from Internet Advertising Awards 2009; and Best Air Cargo Carrier Middle East (for 14th consecutive year) from Cargo News Asia, Hong Kong.
