AWKA—THE Federal Government has given approval for the construction of a cargo airport in Anambra State, the Commissioner for Information, Chief Maja Umeh, has said.
Addressing newsmen in Awka yesterday, Umeh said the airport project, which is a joint venture between Orient Petroleum and Anambra State government is to be sited at Ifite Umueri in Anambra East Local Government Area.
According to Umeh, land for the project had already been acquired, while work on the access road to the airport has begun.
He explained that the take-off of the project was delayed because it required proper planning, noting that everything is now ready for work to commence.
The airport is sited in an area mapped out for the proposed mega city in the state.
The Commissioner also explained that a programme to give the commercial town of Onitsha a face lift had begun.
According to him, it would include the beautification of the Upper Iweka Road and its environs and would eventually extend to the entire city.

I am very happy for the good news. That is evidence of a good leader. This is the best thing that happened to our state and I pray that this project will not enter the hands of ghost officers impersonating different offices.

What about the Oba/Onitsha Airport which our luxury-bus-owner-brothers truncated since 1986? Will they not frustrate this as well? But why “CARCO” Airport in the first place. Above all, is there any International Airport in the Eastern Part? Please you people should stop bringing up this kind of issue bcos its no big deal, and people like me are mad at the Fed Govt posture about the Easterners.
Pls can sm one ask the northerners what are they taking d south east people to be? we are not one Nigeria. how many project has been commissioned in d south east?
Anambrarians I ask this one question. Which is more pressing? Building a New Airport or asking the Federal Government to completely fix your erosional sites? A blind man knows the answer. To the promoters of the Airport project watch out the tarmac of this new airport may be hit by an erosion sooner than you think. Anambrarians please ask for meat and not bone.
whan shall our eyes be opened? how many contracts has been awarded starting from the adiminstration of OBJ to YAR’DUA’s? how many of them has been completed? is it not the high time we ask ourselves questions? how long should we be fooled before we shine our eyes? Lucky Dube said that you can fool some people sometimes but you can’t fool all the people all the time, but FG has fool us all, all the time.
Pls can somebody tell me what is happening to the orient refinary is the work still in progress?
