Why I didn’t investigate Ogundeji’s death — Policeman

By Innocent Anaba

LAGOS—A Coroner court sitting in Yaba, Lagos, which is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Thisday Newspaper Editorial Board member, Mr. Abayomi Ogundeji, was  yesterday told by the officer-in-charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS),  Mr. Abbana Gaji,  a Superintendent of Police, that he did not carry out any investigation on the death of Ogundeji.

Senior Magistrate Mukaila Fadeyi, had on Monday, ordered Gaji to appear before the court, to tell the court the outcome of the investigation he conducted into the circumstances surrounding Ogundeji’s death.

Gabi, in his testimony at yesterday’s resumed hearing of the coroner, told the court that he did not bother to investigate Ogundeji’s death, as he merely adopted the conclusion reached by the Homicide Section, State Criminal and Investigation Department (CID), Panti, that Ogundeji died as a result of armed robbery attack.

Not satisfied with the explanation, Fadeyi asked what he wrote in his final report,  but Gaji said he could not remember.

“You mean you came here just to say you cannot remember. I don’t understand, how can you say you have forgotten, why is everybody playing safe,” Fadeyi querried.

Gaji, in reply, said he did not prepare before coming to court to testify and that he was only informed that he would be coming to court early yesterday, insisting that Ogundeji was shot by unknown armed robbers going by the testimonies of witnesses.
