U-17 World Cup arrives Enugu today

The FIFA U-17 World Cup will arrive in Enugu today. The tour has been designed to showcase the trophy to teeming soccer loving people of Enugu.

It is also meant to give the fans a taste of the trophy that Nigeria intends to win for keeps.The trophy will arrive at the Akanu Ibiam Airport, Emene, near Enugu at 10 am, and will be received by Chairman of Enugu Sub-Seat of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Mr. Chidi Offor Okenwa.

The trophy will be conveyed in a motorcade through some designated routes in Enugu metropolis to Enugu State Government House, where His Excellency, the Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sullivan Iheanacho Chime, and members of the State Executive Council will receive it at the Exco chambers within the Lion Building. At the end of the reception at Government House, Enugu, the trophy will be taken in a motorcade through important places in Enugu to Ogbete Main Market and from there to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, the main venue of the World Cup.

It is expected that Enugu Sub-Seat of LOC will use the opportunity to unveil the composite logo approved by FIFA for the Sub-Seat.
The composite logo features a combination of Enugu city logo and the FIFA U-17 World Cup Logo. This has been designed to commemorate the 100 years of the existence of Enugu metropolis popularly known as the ‘Coal City’.

The general public, sports enthusiasts, members of Rangers Supporters Club, and the Super Eagles supporters club are all expected to grace the occasion, which will mark the kick off for the activities toward a successful hosting of the World Cup, aka “Nigeria 2009”.

Meanwhile, the first group of FIFA staff who will run the tournament will start arriving today for the World tournament “Nigeria 2009”.
Some of the Sub-Seats: Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, Calabar and Lagos are expected to hold pre-tournament clinics on Sunday.
