Port Harcourt— Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has said that politicians fighting him in the state are only fighting God, as he was enthroned by Him, stressing that they would encounter monumental failure in the fight.

He said his opponents were merely seeking relevance because they knew they no longer mattered in the political arena of Rivers State.

According to him,  their agitation lacks merit for discussion because they have no focus and are not fighting for the well being of the people.

Amaechi, who celebrated his two years in office with a thanksgiving service at Corpus Christi Catholic Cathedral, Port Harcourt, yesterday, said those politicians who were still in court challenging his enthronement  were in the habit of deceiving the people by raising unnecessary alarm about his being removed from office soon  by the courts.

“Every day, they lie to the people that we shall remove him (Amaechi) from office and they have been telling these lies since two years and we shall be starting our third year in office from tomorrow, Monday, October 26, 2009, yet they are making noise about removing me.

“That is how they will continue to remove me from office until we complete our first tenure and start another tenure. The truth of the matter is that they have already lost the battle even before they started fighting,” the governor said.

Underscoring the fact that he was installed by God, Amaechi said he was “just an ordinary boy who grew up in Diobu without a godfather at all.

“Becoming governor is surely an act of God. Those who have godfathers have not been chosen by God yet, so they should relax because I am here by the grace of Almighty God.”

The governor, who took traditional rulers and some stakeholders round many of the projects embarked upon in the last two years, recalled the obstacles and many challenges he faced while trying to be governor of the state.

Amaechi said he had forgiven those who opposed him while seeking to be governor, recalling his short exile in Ghana because of the intense pressure for him to withdraw his case from court.

He praised the progressive opposition parties, led by Prince Tonye Princewill of the Action Congress, who he noted, have been constructive in their opposition and have helped him  immensely in the governance of the state.

In his sermon, Rev. Fr. Stephen Dedua told the congregation that God’s love was without end and that it was only God who chooses those He wants to serve Him.
