BENIN—CHAIRMAN of the Gani Fawehinmi Foundation, Comrade Kaduna Osa Eboigbodi, has expressed concern over the delay in the clearance of Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s nominees for the State Universal Basic Education Board by Edo State House of Assembly.
He advised both the executive and legislative arms of government to close ranks in the overall interest of the state.
Eboigbodi, who yesterday in Benin spoke at the inauguration of the foundation, said that this was the time for both arms of government to bury personal interests and allow the collective will of the majority to prevail.
In the inauguration ceremony which was well attended by trade union groups, students, market women, motor bike riders, among other interest groups, the chairman said that the prolonged strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), “is symbolic of a failing nation which requires the urgent intervention of all men of good willâ€.
He also expressed concern over the delay in the implementation of the Teachers Salary Structure (TSS), saying that the issue was becoming more complex by the day.
On the foundation, Comrade Eboigbodi, who is also Edo State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said the Gani Fawehinmi Foundation for Good Governance was poised to build bridges, confidence in government and people, highlight issues for public concern and bring to the front burner issues that would assist in good policy formulation by the three tiers of government.
“We believe that this country can only come out of this political quagmire if we and our leaders treat each other with the touch of common brotherhood bonded by love, promoted by the burning desire to set an enduring structure of good governance devoid of ego, but guided by the utilitarian philosophy of the good for the majority,†he said.
He also called on the federal government to release the Justice Uwais report on electoral reforms; saying that the foundation endorsed the recommendations contained in both reports and believes that genuine implementation of the reports has the potentials of deepening democracy in the country.
