The Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) has defended the election of Mrs Uche Ekwunife, as its party candidate for the Anambra gubernatorial election in 2010, saying “a woman as the PPA governorship candidate will make the needed difference because Anambra needs the loving care of a hard-working, people-oriented woman such as honorable Ekwunife.â€
Mrs Ekwunife is House of Representatives member, representing Aniocha, Njikoka and Dunukofia Federal Constituency of Anambra State.
At the party’ s primaries conducted at the Finotel Hotel in Awka, Ekwunife polled 458 votes out of a total of 892 cast to beat Etiaba, who polled 220.
Other aspirants were Dr. Okey Eze, 106; Evangelist Kenneth Chukwuemeka, 58; Mr. Okey Chikwendu 28 and Dr. Tom Menakaya 2 votes. 21 votes were voided.
However, defending Ekwunife’s election, PPA in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Ben Onyechere said the party’s candidate’s activities in her constituency speaks for themselves. He added that her works also speaks volume.
“The time has come when the bickering associated with male chauvinism should cease. Women have always been known to bring about peaceful co-existence in any society, particularly, that they constitute the largest number of voters.
“Luckily for Anambra PPA, the person chosen by the PDP to carry their governorship flag is nothing to worry about. He was part of the economic team of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and we have all seen where they led economy under them,†he added.
