Police checkpoint: Onitsha residents petition IG

By Enyim Enyim

ONITSHA—Residents of Onitsha, the commercial nerve centre  of the South East, have called on the Inspector General of Police to as a matter of urgency dismantle the numerous police check points on the Onitsha-Enugu and Onitsha-Owerri expressways on grounds that the policemen deployed to check crime in the area, have resorted to extorting money from motorists, commercial motorcycle operators and also cause serious traffic jam on the roads.

Some of the residents who spoke with Vanguard said the performance of the security personnel, some of who where deployed from other states was below the expectation of the people because they pay special attention to the ‘ rogger’ they collect from the motorists than being on the alert for criminals, who have been terrorising the state.

One of the residents and chairman of the tools and allied market at the main market, Onitsha and former governorship aspirant on the platform of the National Conscience Party, Chief Peter Okala said the presence of the anti- riot police had done more harm than good to the people of Onitsha.

According to him, the policemen in a bid to extort money from every vehicle at the various check points cause unbearable traffic jam that stretched more than a kilometer on the highway in some cases.

“I want to tell you that the policemen that were sent here to check crime in the state are not helping matters.

Their only interest is the money they collect from the motorists. As I speak with you now, crime is on the increase in Anambra state, talk about kidnappping, armed robbery and the like”.

Besides, he said because of the traffic hold up the policemen cause on the roads, most people on essential duties no longer meet up their duty calls in their various places of work.
