Jos — Plateau State University, where academic activities were suspended since 2007, might reopen soon following a commitment by the state government in this regard.
The commitment to re-open the university “within a reasonable time†was part of the out of court settlement between government and former workers of the university led by the pioneer Vice- Chancellor, Professor John Wade.
Wade and others had gone to the Jos High Court to challenge the closure of the university and their sack by the state government on the ground that the action contravened the act establishing the university.
The V-C, who was seconded to the University of Jos had, among others things, challenged the power of the state government to remove him from office while serving a tenure appointment which had not elapsed.
However, after a long-drawn battle, the parties agreed to explore an out of court settlement and report back to the court presided over by Justice Thomas Naron.
