will be the main agenda as over 50 sports ministers across the continent converge in Abuja next Monday for the commencement of the 3rd African Ministers’ Conference which holds between October 12 and 19.

The NSC, which championed the crusade for the dissolution of the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA), argued that lumping Sports together with Culture under Social Affairs in the EU Structure has been the bane of sports development in the continent.

Director General of the NSC, Sir Patrick Ekeji, said that the dissolution of the SCSA was the best thing the AU has done but it ‘would be meaningless until Sports Department is created,’   stressing that the forthcoming Ministers Conference would have to arrive at a consensus that will convince the AU of the need for such a department.

“Sports has a big role to play in the new AU dispensation,” Ekeji said. “Sports has played (and still plays) important role in the macro-economic growth of the continent. AU cannot afford not to give appropriate recognition to this.”

Speaking on the Ministers Conference, the DG commended President Umaru Musa Yar ‘Adua for his approval of the conference, saying that the president has been supportive of all moves to ensure that Nigeria hosts a befitting conference and in a peaceful and friendly atmosphere.
