No Ughelli vigilante member involved in Irri crisis – Asaboro

By  Festus Ahon
UGHELLI—CHAIRMAN of the Ughelli Security Management Committee, Chief Godwin Asaboro has denied that the Ughelli vigilante was involved in the crisis that bedeviled Irri community, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State as the people of Oleh said they were not having any rift with their Irri neighbours.

He said that contrary to recent media report, no member of the Ughelli vigilante was arrested by the police in connection with the Irri crisis.

Asaboro spoke to our correspondent yesterday while debunking the media report credited to Mr. Charles Muka, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Delta State Police Command.

According to him, the Ughelli vigilante was working in harmony with the police policy on community policing, adding that members of the Ughelli vigilante were peace loving and law abiding. Asaboro held that the group was committed to its role of assisting the police to combat crime in the area.

He insisted that members of the group were well cultured, adding that they could not have left Ughelli for Irri to take part in their internal wrangling. In a related development, the people of Oleh in a statement said they were not having any rift with the people of Irri.

In a statement signed by Sir Samson Olugua, Mr. Joseph Ejeh, and Mr. Martins Areh, President, Secretary and Public Relations Officer, (PRO) of Oleh community respectively, they said; “we are constrained to state here that the said report is very embarrassing, baseless and unfounded.

“The people of Oleh community have at no time, any rift or violent crisis with our neighbouring Irri community. Oleh people are peace loving and law abiding citizens. It is a well known fact that Oleh community is one of the most peaceful communities in Delta State.

No wonder strangers (civil servants mostly) posted to serve in Oleh chose to leave their families behind when posted to other towns to serve.

“Hence, we use this medium to call on the public to disregard the publication in its entirety and see it as an unfounded story. Oleh has always been at peace with Irri and all other neighbouring communities, no matter the level of provocation”.
