NGE lauds FG peace efforts in Niger Delta
THE Nigerian Guild of Editors  (NGE) has hailed the breakthrough by the Federal Government in restoring peace to the Niger Delta.
The guild’s standing committee, rising from a two day meeting in Umuahia, yesterday, said the federal authorities and militants “are on the right path to peace through the successful implementation of the first phase of amnesty programme for militants in the Niger Deltaâ€.
In a communique signed by the NGE president, Gbenga Adefaye and the general secretary, John Ndukauba, the guild said: “The Federal Government should sustain the tempo of peace by fulfilling all its promises of faithfully attending to the main causes of agitation and militancy in the Niger Delta. The editors decried the prevailing high level of insecurity in the country leading to the loss of lives, especially those of journalists.
“The editors lament the unconscionable murder of Bayo Ohu of The Guardian newspapers, Lagos, coming closely after the unresolved murder in recent past of Abayomi Ogundeji, formerly of ThisDay newspaper as well as the unresolved murder of Godwin Agbroko also of ThisDay newspaper.
The editors asked the police to resolve these murder cases, if it wants to earn the respect of journalists. The editors asked that special attention be paid to the ongoing coroner’s inquest into Ogundeji’s death.”
