LAGOS—The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) yesterday lauded the approval of a new salary structure for Medical and Dental Practitioners, known as consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) by the Federal Government, describing it as a “progressive gesture.â€
In a statement issued in Lagos and co-signed by the President and Secretary-General of NMA, Dr. Prosper Ikechukwu Igboeli and Dr. Kenneth Johnson Okoro, NMA said government had demonstrated commendable goodwill and utmost desire to boost health care delivery through motivation of medical and dental practitioners in the public service.
NMA,which acknowledged the receipt of the circular on CONMESS, added that though it specified that the implementation is for doctors in the federal service, NMA wanted it implemented at all levels of health-care (federal, states and local governments).
They pleaded their sincere desire that the motivation be extended to other Health Workers as they work as a team, but with maintenance of the existing reactivities in emoluments.
According to them “The primary and secondary levels of Health Care which are superintended by the states and local governments are supposed to take care of about 90 per cent of patients and their ailments. It is therefore clear that for our deplorable Health indices to significantly improve, this well intentioned motivation must apply at these levels of Health Careâ€
