The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), yesterday congratulated Nigerians for the election of the country into the Security Council of the United Nations as a non-permanent member, fifteen years after Nigeria was elected to the same position.
The association in a statement by its 1st National Vice-President, Mr Ikeazor Akaraiwe and National Publicity Secretary, Mr Muritala Abdulrasheed, said, “We extend our hearty congratulations to the government and good people of Nigeria in respect of the heart warming development of Nigeria’s election into the Security Council of the United Nations as a non-permanent member fifteen years after Nigeria last sat thereonâ€.
“We assert that the election and indeed, the voting pattern which saw Nigeria scoring 186 votes, Gabon 184 votes, Bosnia 183 and Brazil and Lebanon 182 and 180 respectively, clearly indicates the huge potential inherent in Nigeria’s status as a regional power.
“Coming on the eve of its golden jubilee celebrations as a nation, the election comes as an oasis of hope in the dark deserts of despair and should afford the government of President Yar’Adua the impetus to reinvent the nation especially in the area of electoral reform and respect for human rights. Once more, hearty congratulations to Mr. President, the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeriaâ€, the NBA added.
