…makes case for down syndrome children

Nigerians have been  enjoined not to discriminate against those living with down syndrome in the society. The Executive Secretary, MTN Foundation limited, Ms. Nonny Nduka-Eze gave the charge during a seminar organized by Down syndrome Association of Nigeria in partnership with MTN Foundation to kick off the 2009 awareness week   in Lagos.

She said the idea behind the event was to show understanding and love to children born with Down syndrome in the spirit of doing good, and urged Nigerians not to discriminate against them but show them understanding, love and care to enable them get properly integrated into the society.

Nduka-Eze who was appreciative of DSAN in its effort to get the Down syndrome get catered for and integrated back to the society, said MTN has over 360 projects scattered in all the 36 states of Nigeria as a way giving back to its society, saying that improving human dignity and alleviating poverty is the only way to give those with Down syndrome a sense of belong.
Improving human dignity and alleviating poverty is one of the things we are doing to people living with disability. MTN all over the world, has a foundation of giving back to the society, to assist government.” she explained.

The three years campaign according to her, had helped to sorting people out of the closest, bring the issue of people with disability to the front burner with a view to seeking a convention.

Continuing, the MTN scribe said the company had plans to assist disability aids to people across the country. “MTN is about to empower people with disability to work at the customer can contents. It is also empowering them with computer skills,” she revealed.

She therefore assured that MTN would continue in its commitment to show others the way go in supporting the society through corporate social responsibility.

On what causes Down syndrome in babies, Nduka Eze said learning disability is not a problem with intelligence, but are caused by a difference in the brain that affects how information is received, processed or communicated.
Children and young adults with learning disability have trouble processing sensory information because they see, hear and understand things differently.

She however, urged Nigerians to assist Children and young adults with learning disability since they have trouble processing sensory information because they see, hear and understand things differently. Other projects being carried out by MTN according to Eze include: MTN school connect; rural telephony; employment opportunity with MTN foundation Nigeria customer relations and phone ladies in rural communities.
