PORT HARCOURT—UNIVERSITY of Port Harcourt was thrown into mourning Saturday night after unknown gunmen snuffed life out of the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the institution, Mr. Wali Amadi.
Sources within the university said the sad incident occurred at about 8pm at the residence of Professor Ozor Mercury Ndimeli of the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies.
They said the late chief security officer had responded to a distress call at the residence of the professor when he met his untimely death.
Some unknown assailants had allegedly stormed the residence of Professor Ndimeli that Saturday night apparently for the professor but met his absence.
They reportedly ordered those in the house to lie face down, and later called Professor Ndimeli to say they were in his house and were in charge of situation.
It is not clear how the late CSO got to know of developments, but he reportedly rushed to the scene alone.
This was after he had allegedly alerted other members of the security team in the university.
No member of the residence could say how the late CSO was killed because, according to the sources, they were lying face down and could not, therefore, know what had transpired between the assailants and the CSO in the house.
Sources quoted the residents of the house as saying all they heard was a shot which apparently was aimed at the CSO.
The sources said that when the security team the late CSO alerted rushed to the scene, they called his telephone but got no response.
They were said to have found his remains in the pool of his own blood in the building, but missed the assailants.
The Public Relations Officer of the university, Dr. Williams Wodi, and the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Rita Inoma Abbey, confirmed the sad development.
Mrs. Abbey said the police was battling to unravel the killers of the late CSO.
Meanwhile, the university PRO ruled out armed robbery, as no valuable was removed from the building.
He said the assailants locked those found in the house in one room and went about shooting sporadically, adding that the CSO was probably killed by the shot of the hoodlums.
