OWERRI—Imo State government has described some of the federal roads in the state as “death traps,” and passionately appealed to the Federal Government to urgently reconstruct them to save lives.

The Deputy Governor, Dr. Ada Okwuonu, stated this when she played host to members of the Works Committee, House of Representatives, on behalf of the Governor, at the Government House, Owerri.

“Some federal roads in the state like the Owerri-Aba road has turned into a death trap. This administration has not ceased to wonder why the contracting firm has not shown its presence on site,” Okwuonu said.

While urging the contractor to go back to site immediately, the Deputy Governor, however, condemned contractors who collect mobilization fee and abandon their contracts.

She appealed to the Federal Government to extend the dualization of Port Harcourt-Owerri road, stressing that since Imo is an NDDC state, it should enjoy all privileges enjoyed by others sister states.

Earlier, the Committee Chairman, Mr. Kabiru Jalo,  had said  they were in the state to assess the extent of the on-going federal roads in the state.
