According  to Engr. Gerald Anekwe, the President of the F.H.A Lawn Tennis Club, the competition is an annual event used by the club to mark the 49th independence anniversary of Nigeria and also  to commemorate the birthday of Chief Euriel Chukwudum, the Managing Director of Dennis Hotel Abuja and the Managing Director of Evernal Fan who turned 49th on   October 1st 2009.

“It is an Inter-club event that has been  going on for about 10 years. We  use it to commemorate the birthday of our former chairman and president Euriel Chukwudum.

“The event is specifically played only on the first of  October, apparently to celebrate his birthday. “Mr Chukwudum was born in October 1st 1960,” he said.

The celebrant of the event,  Chief Chukwudum expressed delight over the coincidental celebration of  Nigeria ‘s independence alongside his birthday.

“I am very happy that my  birthday falls on the day  Nigeria is celebrating her birthday. It is a joyous day especially having friends and wellwishers coming to drink and dine with me. It has been a tradition of the club every first of October,  and I am very happy about. At the end of the tournament, the winner will go home with one of my products Evernal Fan. Also people who came to grace the occasion also go home with gifts,” he said

However, as Nigeria celebrated her 49th anniversary as  independent Nations Chief Chukwudum said the country is far behind in all aspect particular in the aspect of Sports as he believes Nigeria would have gone far in the aspect of Tennis. Adding that it is time for stock taking in all sectors of development and achievement.

“In sports sector, we are very sadly witnessing traumatizing nose diving that has reached all time low in all sports particularly tennis. Our Tennis would be have improved more than this but because people in the helm of affairs don’t want to look into it and see the reason for us to go further that is why  are the way we now.

“When you go to other countries  their tennis is something to write home about in our case is a different thing entirely.
Am calling on the government to do something about because if they put money into Tennis it will help our youth and also reduce crime in the country,” he concluded.

The winner of the competition, Chief Okeke expressed delight over his victory as he believed it is the beginning of God’s blessings for  him this month.
