ENUGU—THE Enugu State Government has ordered the closure of 751 secondary, primary and nursery schools, which were established in the17 Local Government Areas of the state without meeting the required standard or obtaining government’s approval.
Already, 12 proprietors of such illegal schools were, yesterday arraigned before a Magistrate Court in the state. The Chief Magistrate, Osondu Chukwuani, issued a bench warrant for their immediate arrest for failing to honour the court summons in person.
Although ten of them were represented in court by their counsel, Osondu ordered that the suspects should be arrested and produced in court on November 4, 2009 to face charges preferred against them by the State Ministry of Education.
The accused persons are proprietors of Evangel Nursery and Primary School, owned by the Assemblies of God Church, Train–Up Nursery and Primary school, De-Excellence International Academy, Kings Mission Primary school, Power Point Secondary school, Word of Faith Nursery and Primary School and Transfiguration Nursery and Primary School owned by the Catholic Church, all based at Abakpa in Enugu East Local Government Area of the state.
Others are Kings and Queens Nursery and Primary School, Great Hope High School, Sunshine Nursery and Primary School, Maryland Nursery and Primary School and Eucharia Nursery and Primary schools.
The 12 schools were among the 751 private schools recently discovered by the State Ministry of Education to be operating without approved licenses and necessary laws guiding their activities.
They were said to have earlier been served notices by the state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Festus Uzor, to stop further operations, but their alleged refusal led to their being charged to court by the state government.
