Eight die in auto crash

By Jimitota Onoyume
PORT HARCOURT—NO FEWER than eight persons were feared dead yesterday in a ghastly motor accident at Ahoada town end of the East/West road.

The fatal accident involved a 14-seater bus belonging to  a notable transport company in Benin that plies the Port Harcourt route to several states.

The bus with registration number XN 573 BEN was said to be on its way from Port Harcourt to Abuja.

Some men of the Federal Road Safety Commission from the Ahoada division who rushed to the scene of the accident, said it happened at about 10.am.

They said it was a head on collision between a Peugeot car that was damaged beyond recognition and the bus. The number of the Peugeot car could not be ascertained because it was badly damaged, but the bus was smashed into several parts, though the number plate was still visible.

The road safety officers who spoke to Vanguard under condition of anonymity, said from on- the-spot findings, it was like the bus was conveying some passengers that were either heading for a Judo game or coming from such game because they found some papers in the vehicle relating to such.

They said some of the accident victims had been rushed to Ahoada General Hospital, while others were taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital which is about twenty five minutes drive from the scene of the accident.

A staff of the transport company who rushed to the scene of the accident confirmed to  Vanguard that the vehicle left Port Harcourt and was heading to Abuja with about thirteen passengers.
