LAGOS — AP Moller Terminal has foiled an attempt by a Customs agent to dupe an Asian importer of N2 million after falsification of bills for payment of import duty.
The company warned importers to ensure that they reconfirm bills given to them by their agents before making any payment.
Media consultant to APMT, Mr Bolaji Akinola, said the fraud was detected because the consignee became suspicious when his agent gave him a bill of N4 million for a N2 million job.
Mr. Akinola explained that the agent in question got a bill of about N2 million from APM Terminal but went ahead to forge another invoice which raised the charges to N4 million.
His words: “The forged invoice was bearing APM Terminal’s name and logo and rather than present the original invoice of N2 million which was the actual charge for the service emanating from us, he gave the hapless importer a forged invoice of over N4 million
“Fortunately for the consignee, he sensed that something was amiss and decided to confirm from the City Office of APM Terminals and that was how the fraud was discovered,†he said.
