AWKA—GOVERNOR Peter Obi, yesterday in Awka, released N354 million to the 177 communities in the state for the construction of 1000 primary school classrooms in the state. Each community got N2 million.
Performing the flag-off of the classrooms construction with the handing over of the first installment of the N2 million out of the N6milion budgeted per community, the Governor said that urban towns in the state would get more than five classrooms, depending on their population densities.
While decrying what he called playing politics with the destiny of the people, the Governor said that he would not allow politics to distract him from doing those things that would be of great benefit to the people of the state at all times.
Charging the communities in the state to face the projects in the interest of the children of the state, he said that each community should form a building committee comprising the traditional Ruler, the President General (men), the President General (Women), the head of the PTA of the school and whoever the community chooses on their own for the construction and two other people to be appointed by the community, preferably those knowledgeable in civil engineering. He warned that nobody had been designated by the government to interfere with the job or demand anything from the people as the job of government functionaries were merely supervisory.
