AWKA—The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has planned what it called a unity rally to take place in Awka today to drive home its position that the state executive of the party was still in firm control of the majority members of the party in the state.
Though the leadership of the party was very active prior to the controversial primaries of the party that threw up former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo, as the party’s flagbearer for the February 6, 2010 election. It had since been sidelined and none of the executive members had been involved in all the gatherings so far organized by the party in the state.
Power behind the group and the acclaimed godfather of Anambra politics, Chief Chris Uba, who had earlier in the year mobilized all the wards and local government executives of the party with buses and motorcycles in readiness for the political campaigns as well as a sensitization tour of the 21 Local Government areas of the state, is expected to lead other stakeholders at today’s rally.
State Publicity Secretary of PDP, Mr. Afam Ilounoh, who briefed newsmen in Awka on the preparations for the rally, described as embarrassing a situation where the party was being run from outside the state, adding that anybody ignoring the state leadership of the party was doing so at a great risk.
