By Abdulwahab Abdulah
ABUJA – Governor Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano State has said the adoption of the report of the Justice Mohammed Uwais-led Electoral Reform Committee can guarantee genuine and credible elections in 2011 in the country.
Shekarau who was speaking during a visit by the management of Leadership Newspapers in Abuja said the success of ensuring justice and credible general elections in the country lied in the successful implementation of genuine electoral reforms.
Shekarau said it was imperative on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to speedily adopt the report of the Justice Uwais Electoral Reform Committee to pave the way for the enabling electoral laws.
On the Federal Government’s anti corruption crusade, the governor expressed dissatisfaction with the unnecessary delay in the trial of suspects, lamenting that the trend was eroding the confidence of Nigerians in the seriousness of the government.
The governor who said he was not in favour of haphazard trials of corrupt people added that he supported the application of convincing measures capable of showing the world that the anti-corruption war was indeed not a frivolous affair.
He used the opportunity to speak on sundry issues regarding governance in Kano State as well as his rumoured presidential ambition, pointing out philosophically that his fate lies in the hands of God.
