Umuahia—ABIA State government has pledged to clear the backlog of salary arrears owed council workers by virtually all the 17 councils of the state before the end of the year.
No fewer than 14 councils are owing their workers salary arrears ranging between three and seven months.
Worst are Aba North and Aba South councils which owe their workers between six and
seven months arrears.
The council workers in the state, under their umbralla union, NULGE, have vowed to ensure that none of the owing chairmen will be returned to office as they will ensure that they are voted out.
The union condemned a situation where the chairmen comfortably take home their N4 million security vote when their staff could not be paid their salary.
The union has threatened to embark on industrial action if nothing positive happened to ameliorate their suffering.
The workers held a prayer session where they sought the intervention of God.
