Abacha, who commended the positive response of the militant leaders, explained that such demonstration of respect for constituted authority will help the group realise their political goals.
“The amnesty offer by the Federal Government is a right step in the right direction. I believe it will bring lasting peace desired for the growth of the region,†Abacha said.
Abacha told newsmen in his expansive office in Kano that violence had not helped to resolve the Niger Delta question over the years, pointing out that the new approach will stem bloodshed hitherto associated with the region.
The scion of the Abacha dynasty noted that the acceptance of the federal government amnesty offer by the militant leaders has drawn applause and sympathy for the region’s political leaders, adding that the ‘patriotic step’ will fastrack tireless effort to see peace return to the region.
Abacha then enjoined other militants who are yet to lay down their arms to do so in the interest of their political cause, stressing that nothing works under the atmosphere of chaos and confusion.
