ABA – Residents of Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia state have appealed to the Inspector General of Police IGP, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo to disband all police check points and withdraw his men from the streets of the city, even as they called for adequate funding of the Abia vigilance service also known as Bakassi, to enable them to meet the security challenges of the city.
The stance of the residents is coming against the backdrop of the assault on the city weekend, by gunmen believed to be kidnappers, which lasted for over four hours and in which eight people, including two women were said to have lost their lives and several others wounded, including a lady, Chinyere Nwafor, who was hit by a stray bullet on the shoulder, one kilometer away from the scene of the incident.
According to eye witness account, the hoodlums among them three ladies, who came in a black jeep and a cream colour Toyota Camry car, were said to have entered the commercial city through the Obikabia Road Junction along the Ogbor Hill axis.
It was gathered that on approaching a police check point at the Water-side (Aba River) Bridge, the gunmen opened fire and shot in all directions.
