ABUJA – INDICATIONS are rife that the euphoria that brought in the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is ‘dead’ following some irreconcilable differences between the members.
It was gathered that the crisis in the NWC gets polarised everyday with two major ‘camps’ existing, the first is alleged to have the National Chairman, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, as the arrow head while a combination of the deputy, Dr. Bello Mohammed Haliru and the National Secretary, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, are alleged to be leading the other group.
It will be recalled that with the rift getting to almost the anti-climax, the NWC, through the National Publicity Secretary, Prof Rufai Alkali, disowned some comments on the affairs of the party made in the media by the Deputy National Chairman.
The NWC members are polarised in the lingering Anambra State crisis of the party and same applies to that of Plateau and Ogun chapters and with this, a group is out for the neck of Ogbulafor.
Worried by these developments, President Umaru Yar’Adua has summoned a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party for September 24, 2009 to among others discuss the fate of some members of the NWC, just as it was gathered that some of them may be sacked over intractable division and conflict of interest among them.
Confirming the meeting yesterday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali, who noted that it would be the last NEC meeting for the year, said at the meeting, an agenda would be drawn for the mid term convention fixed for March next year.
The mid-term convention is expected to pass either a vote of confidence on the NWC or otherwise which invariably would translate to the termination of the tenure of the office of the Ogbulafor-led NWC.
It was also gathered that President Yar’Adua, as the leader of the party, and other stakeholders are not comfortable with the crisis in the NWC as well as complaints from states with fear that PDP may lose most of the presently controlled states if the issues are not resolved before now.
According to a source, the Deputy National Chairman who enjoys his closeness with the President, was alleged to have led some other NWC members to open a pandora’s box on alleged misdeeds and unethical conduct of some of their members especially the National Chairman, Prince Vincent Eze Ogbulafor.
“The meeting witnessed accusations and counter accusations and President Yar’Adua who was scandalised by the revelations ordered the NWC to summon a NEC meeting where the matter will be tabled before the second highest organ of the party,” the source said.
