Yar’Adua does not interfere in our activities – Ogbulafor

By Henry Umoru

ABUJA – National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, said yesterday that President Umaru Yar’Adua does not interfere in the activities of the National Working Committee (NWC), just as he denied report that the President has ordered them to steer clear of the forthcoming Anambra State gubernatorial primaries.

According to PDP, “the NWC has been in full charge of the nomination process in Anambra State with the recent release of guidelines and the constitution of several committees to oversee the process as a confirmation of this fact.”

A statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali in Abuja yesterday noted that a newspaper (not Vanguard) had reported that President Yar’Adua has urged the NWC to keep itself away from the Anambra State primaries.

Part of the statement read: “The attention of the People’s Democratic Party has been drawn to insinuations in some media houses that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua has directed the National Working Committee (NWC) to steer clear of the conduct of the gubernatorial primaries of Anambra State.

“This report is false and without any foundation whatsoever and should be disregarded by all, because at no time did the President directed the NWC to steer clear of the gubernatorial primaries in Anambra State.

President Yar’Adua, being a principled leader who believes in the concept of separation of powers and the rule of law does not interfere in the day to day running of the party which according to the PDP Constitution is the exclusive preserve of the NWC.

“The NWC under the Chairmanship of Prince Vincent Eze Ogbulafor carefully select membership of various committees after wide and due consultation.

And for the first time in the political history of the nation, serving governors and ministers were made chairmen of various committees because of the sensitive nature of the assignment and the commitment of the National Working Committee to ensure a just, fear, free and credible gubernatorial primaries in Anambra State.

“The report is mischievous and the conclusions therein exist only in the imagination of the reporter and should be discountenanced by all well meaning citizens of this country, particularly our teeming members and supporters.”
