LAGOS — EVER heard the expressions “On cloud nine; and dressed to the nines”?
These simply mean blissfully happy, euphoric or high; very fashionably and elaborately dressed or dressed to the highest degree.
Today is the ninth day of the ninth month of the ninth year in the new millennium and we know that most cultures and religions attach a lot of significance to numbers.
From Africa to Asia, to Europe and the Middle East, religious and magical texts have documented the credence given to numbers by magicians and mystics over the centuries.
Nine is a most remarkable number in many respects and that is why it is held in great reverence by all who study the occult sciences and in mathematical science, as it possesses properties and powers which are found in no other number.
It is the last of the digits, and thus marks the end and is significant of the conclusion of a matter. To the mystic and the religious, the number nine is considered a number of wisdom, spiritual power and mastery.
According to them, the number is usually used “when we want to command, compel, bend another’s will or in any way impose our power over that of another.â€
It is also known that if 9 is multiplied by any other number, from 2 to 9, the resulting number, when reduced to a digit, will always equal 9.
For instance, 2 x 9 = 18.
18 is made up of 1 and 8. Reduce 1 and 8 to a single digit by summing them up thus: 1 + 8 = 9. Same goes for 3 x 9 = 27; which reduced to a single digit by summing them up becomes 2 + 7 = 9. This goes on till you get to 9×9=81. Reduced to a single digit by summing them up becomes 8+1=9
For the Bible scholar, number 9 is the number of finality or judgement. It marks the completeness, the end of all things as to man —the judgment of man and all his works. According to figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO), life expectancy in Nigeria stands at 45 years for males and 46 years for females and by the time we get to another of such significant dates which will be 10/10/10, many people who are alive today, may have passed away.
It is believed by many that on such special dates, special things happen. Reports had it that on the eighth day of the eighth month in 2008 at 8:08 a.m, Hailey Jo Hauer was born and weighed eight pounds, eight ounces.
Do we expect sometghing special today 09-09-09? We’ll know by the end of the day.
In the next 100 years, we will have another 09-09-09, only a few alive today will live to see that day.
