Ilorin â€” The University of Ilorin has been thrown into mourning following the sudden and tragic death of its head of Mass Communication Department, Dr. Doyin Mahmoud.
Dr. Mahmoud, a veteran journalist in his early fifties, was the former Chief Operating Officer of Independent Newspaper Limited.
He passed on at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin on Sunday evening.
His remains were buried at about 6:20pm same day at the Muslim cemetery at the Irewolede area of Ilorin.
He was said to have been admitted at the hospital on Friday following worsening state of his health. The nature of the illness was not ascertained as at press time.
His health was said to have suddenly become worse late last Friday. Interestingly, it was learnt that he had called a number of friends earlier in the day asking after their health.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede who led other officers of the institution to the burial, said the deceased discharged his responsibilities to humanity faithfully.
He said the veteran journalist, who supervised the establishment of the Mass Communication Department of the university, was elated that his works were fruitful when the department produced its first set of graduates.
Oloyede expressed sympathy with Nigerian media over the death of the journalist and also prayed for the repose of his soul and asked God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss.
