Jos – The Senate of the University of Jos has set up a committee to initiate dialogue with the various staff unions towards resolving the impasse created by the current national strike by the various unions.
The six-member committee headed by Professor A.E.O. Ogezi was mandated by the Senate at its emergency meeting last week to reach out to the various unions to discuss terms for re-opening the university.
A source at the meeting which was chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sonni Tyoden the implication of the prolonged strike as it affects the institution was discussed exhaustively.
The committee was also mandated to also dialogue with the studentsâ€™ union of the university in this regard.
It was not clear at press time how far the committee which is expected to report back to the Senate Tuesday have gone in its consultation with the various unions but a source said weekend that it had started reaching out to them.
Other members of the committee, it was learnt were Professors M.T. Yahaya, B.A. Ajala, Musa Gaiya and Elizabeth Obama. Mr. Emmanuel Juander was appointed as Secretary.
The governing council of the institution recently had similar dialogue with the unions in a bid to find a quick end to the strike with the Chairman, Ambassador Ignatius Ajuru pleading that the institution which had lost an academic session before was about losing another.
