Touts take over Umuahia roads

By Anayo Okoli

Umuahia—TOUTS operating in the guise of decongesting roads,  have taken over Umuahia metropolis, causing serious embarrassment to motorists, especially visitors to the Abia state capital city.

The touts, who allegedly work for Umuahia North Local Government Area, now constitute serious menace to both residents and visitors alike with their illegal activities.

The touts stop vehicles at random, jump into the vehicles, especially vehicles with plate numbers from other states, and in most cases, drag the vehicles to a corner only to extort money from them.

There is also report of harassment and molestation of female passengers at various motor parks in the state, especially in Aba and Umuahia.

Meanwhile, the activities of the touts and the menace they cause in the state has caught the attention of the  state government, as the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. John Nwokocha, has said that the government will setup a task force to tackle the activities of the touts.

Motorists, even those on transit to other state are daily being embarrassed by these touts, who claim that they (visitors) pack at a wrong place even when there is no sign to indicate no parking on such spots.

Again, some of them jump into moving vehicles, and struggle for the steering with the driver, thereby putting the lives of passengers and drivers at great danger.
