YOLA – A Yola High Court has sentenced a teenager, Patrick Ozeoma to death by hanging for culpable homicide.
The convict was found guilty of hacking his former master, Late Pericoma Mbasalem to death using a machete in the year 2000.
The prosecution had told the court that the convict, who was working for his late master as a sales boy went berserk and attacked the deceased severally leading to his death.
According to the prosecution, Patrick committed the offence in the year 2000 when he was sixteen years of age following a disagreement over N52,000.00Â sent to him by his mother.
When Patrick was arraigned in court, he earlier pleaded not guilty , but later confessed that he decided to kill his master because his mother sent him the sum of N52,000.00 and the deceased converted it to his own use.
The convict, according to the police was arrested in his attempt to dump the body of the deceased in a nearby pond.
Delivering judgment in the case, the presiding judge, Justice Bemari Bansi averred that the court considered the arguments of both the prosecution and the defence counsels and took the path of justice to act within the dictates of the law by sentencing the convict to death by hanging.
Bansi, who is the Chief Judge of Adamawa State noted that the argument of the counsel to the accused that the convict committed the offence under annoyance was not tenable and not an excuse to commit murder and set aside all the pleas.
However, counsel to the convict from the Nigerian Legal Aid council said the council will appeal against the judgment.
