The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), has provided a new guideline for the Aluminium Roofing Sheets manufacturers.
SON Director General, Dr. John Akanya said that 0.55 millimetres is the new specification for the minimum thickness for Profile Roofing sheets in Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS 488:2004).
“The minimum specified thickness in the Nigerian Industrial Standards for Profile Roofing Sheets (NIS 448:2004), popularly referred to as Long Span, is 0.55milimetres but the organisation has discovered the presence of profile roofing sheets of 0.27mm and 0.35mm in the markets.â€
These, he explained, are not in conformity with the specification in the standard, and are unacceptable to SON, and a disservice to the Nigerian consumers.
He stated that SON Enforcement officials at all entry points as well as in the state offices nationwide have been put on alert to carry out regular market survey to apprehend all substandard Profile Aluminum Roofing Sheets found in the markets or coming into the country.
The Nigerian Consumers and other sister regulatory agencies have also been alerted on the issue to provide support in the surveillance and market survey for the substandard Long Span Aluminum Roofing Sheets.
Local manufacturers and importers of profile Aluminium Roofing Sheets, he said are warned to adhere strictly to the specifications in standard profile Aluminium roofing Sheets of not less than 0:55mm as specified or face the wrath of the law.
“SON Enforcement official and all states offices Nationwide have been directed to be at alert and carry out regular market survey for substandard profile Aluminium Roofing Sheets.â€
Akanya believes that compliance to the directive by stakeholders would go a long way to improve the quality of local roofing sheets and boost the nation’s economy.
