ABUJA—The Senate yesterday gave a four week deadline to its committee on Judiciary to come up with a report on a bill seeking to amend the evidence act towards allowing electronic evidence in the prosecution of bank fraudsters and suspects involved in the recent spate of bank failures.
The Senate resolution followed the second reading of the bill to amend the 65 year old Evidence Act that it is envisaged would also lead to the prosecution of perpetrators of ATM fraud and other computer crimes.
The Evidence Act in its present form does not make provision for the prosecution of perpetrators of such computer crimes.
The bill entitled “A bill for an Act to amend the Evidence Act CapE14 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria to permit admissibility of electronic and computer generated evidence†is sponsored by Senator Sola Akinyede.
The bill which received the support of Senators also aims to incorporate evidence generated from mobile phone text messages according to Senator Akinyede.
