ONITSHA – Pensioners in Anambra state are facing hard times following non payment of their pensions since April this year by the State Local Government Staff Pensions Board.
The Executive Secretary of the Board, Chief Aloysius Igboanugo, who dropped the hint, said the problem was caused by the on going verification exercise being carried out by the state/ local government joint account committee, which is incharge of disbursing pensions in the state.
He said the delay in concluding the exercise had caused untold hardship to the beneficiaries as well as relations of deceased retirees. He appealed to the committee to expedite action and release the list of those they found out to be genuine pensioners.
Meanwhile, the State and Local Government Affairs in the office of the Head of Service of the Federation, Abuja, has declared Anambra State Local Government Staff Pensions Board as the best in pension administration.
Igboanugo said the declaration followed the out come of the verification exercise which the team from the Head of Service of the Federation carried out and found the boardâ€™s performance above other pension boards in the country.
According to Igboanugo, the team was in the state to find out how the Federal Governmentâ€™s 5% contribution of pensions fund was being utilised.
â€œThey came to Anambra and found out that our system was computerised for an easy assessment of every statistics. They also found out how we processed each pensionerâ€™s application, extract all the relevant information, schedule for payment.
After going through our files and details of payments, they were satisfied and confessed they had not seen such a perfect job in any other state of the federation,â€ he added.
