Residents decry menace of hawkers in Abakaliki
By Dennis Agbo
ABAKALIKI – Residents in Abakaliki metropolis have condemned what they call gross indiscipline and nuisance constituted by food item hawkers along the popular meat market road at the Abakpa main market in the state capital.
The hawkers up till yesterday that our reported visited the area, have completely taken over the busy road.
The residents also accused the government of Chief Martin Elechi of providing assistants that lack the capacity to create jobs. They also called on the Governor to quickly drop some of his cabinet members.
The angry residents pointed accusing fingers at the state Ministries of Health and Environment, Works and Transport, and Commerce and Industries as government agencies that overlooked their duties and allowed the meat market road to become impassable by both motorists and pedestrians.
A building engineer, Mr. Augustine Nwofe, who complained to Vanguard said, “I am surprised that the Ministry of Environment has left this place to deteriorate to this state.
I learnt that the Governor allocates N10 million every month for refuse evacuation in this city but look, every where is filled with dirt. The meat market is a clear case of negligence by government.â€
