OWERRI— Imo State Council of Radio, Television, Theatre Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) has condemned the brutal attack of Radio Nigeria Correspondent, Mr. Wale Oluokun, by Governor Ikedi Ohakim’s Chief Security Officer (CSO), Mr. C. Bako.
According to a release by the Secretary, Mr Eddy Anyanwu, the Union described the act as “wicked and an insult to media practitioners, especially the Federal radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN)â€.
Anyanwu called on the state government to publicly apologise to FRCN management, journalists and broadcasters, as well as settle the hospital bills of the battered harmless journalist.
Apart from asking Ohakim to immediately remove his CSO, Mr. Bako, the Union equally called on journalists attached to the Government House, Owerri, to embark on one month strike, as a mark of respect and solidarity to their colleague.
“The FRCN as a Federal Government media outfit has outgrown such maltreatment of its workers. RATTAWU appeals to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo, and the Director General of the State Security Services (SSS), to ensure adequate protection of media workers against brutality by security operativesâ€, Anyanwu pleaded.
