Asaba—A 74-year-old widow (names withheld) who was kidnapped at Illah, Oshimili North local government area of Delta state last November, has died allegedly in the hands of her abductors.
Already, detectives from Zone 5, Benin City, who are currently investigating the matter, exhumed the body of the woman from a shallow grave last week Thursday.
Four persons, including a close family friend, have also been arrested in connection with the incident.
Vanguard gathered that following the confession of one of the arrested suspects, the policemen were able to find the spot where the woman was buried and subsequently exhumed the body.
The kidnappers had demanded N7 million as ransom but it was not clear whether the abductors finally killed her when the money was not forthcoming or that the woman died due to prolonged isolation and mental agony.
State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Charles Muka, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), had earlier described the kidnap as an inside job.
He told Vanguard in November 2008, shortly after the kidnap, that “we are investigating that case and we suspect in-house conspiracy aimed at getting money from the children of the woman outside the country.â€
