Igbo community expresses concern over killing of kinsman in S/Africa
Johannesburg – The Igbo community in South Africa at the weekend expressed concern over the killing of their kinsman in “questionable circumstances’’.
The Eze Ndi Igbo in South Africa, Martin Emechiebe, said the trend was frightening, calling for more vigilance and unity not just among the Igbos, but all Nigerians in South Africa.
Emechiebe spoke as the Igbo community converged to hold a service of songs in honour of Mr Emeka Ezekaka, who was allegedly felled by police bullets a fortnight ago.
He said that it was painful that Ezekaka, a businessman, was gunned down just as he was planning to pay the bride price for his wife on October 24.
The Igbo leader urged his kinsmen to pray to God to ward off such ugly incidents.
He said the community would ensure that the police investigated and unravelled the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Ezekaka.
He said the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate General had been notified of the development.
The President of Nigerian Union (NU) in South Africa, Mr Jason Osuafor, who also spoke on the occasion, said the death was unfortunate.
He advised those in attendance to always do things that would ensure that in death, they could be remembered positively.
