By Ebele Orakpo

To put Nigeria on track to meet the water and sanitation millennium development goals with service delivery of local management and sustainability, Diazo Specialities Nigeria Limited, dealers in innovative products, has come to the market with an ecological broad spectrum disinfectant known as Huwa-San.

According to the MD, Diazo Specialities Nigeria Limited, Mr. Zacchaeus Ediare, Huwa-San is a unique formulation because it is highly effective against all germs including bacteria, viruses, fungi, spores, algae, amoeba and biofilms.

Enumerating the advantages of this water sanitizer over conventional disinfectants, Mr. Toyin Fabamise, the chemist in charge, said it removes microorganisms that could be injurious to health. “Some conventional disinfectants made to take away microorganisms in water would impart taste, odour and colour to the water but it is generally known that the WHO established that good water should be tasteless, odourless and colourless.”
He said if Huwa-San is applied to water, it will not impart taste, colour or odour to the water.

“We all know that our environment has high temperature and some conventional water disinfectants you put in your water would go out of the water and over time because the temperature of the environment but Huwa-San has been uniquely formulated such that it is still effective even at boiling temperature of water which means that come rain, come sunshine, the disinfectant is still in the water, killing all the microbes,” he said.

Huwa-San, according to Fabamise is environment-friendly because its components are natural elements present in the environment, non-corrosive for all types of surfaces in the recommended concentrations, and does not bleach.

He said the product is stable for a long period of time so it has long-term     effectiveness against all  types of micro organisms in case of post-contamination unlike other disinfectants.
Speaking on the occasion, the CEO of Huwa-San in Belgium, Prof. Roebben Jozef said unlike some disinfectants which by-products can cause cancer, Huwa-San is completely safe even when swallowed because it quickly breaks down to water and oxygen.

Also speaking, Vanden Bereme, a professor of Microbiology at the University of Antwerp, Belgium who worked on the product corroborated what Jozef said, noting that the non-toxic components are biodegradable to two essential natural elements – water and oxygen.

They stated that the product is safe for disinfection of fruits, vegetables, meat and fish by rinsing or washing at suggested dosage, adding that it has been approved to be used in food disinfection in more than 35 countries across Europe, Africa and Asia.
