ABA—Despite efforts being put in place by Abia state government to stem the tide of kidnapping and other violent crime, particularly in Aba , gunmen have intensified their nefarious activities in the commercial city, causing residents sleepless nights.
Few days after gunmen believed to be kidnappers, abducted two expatriate workers of a local firm in Aba and shot dead a soldier attached to the joint patrol team, gunmen Sunday night at about 7.30, kidnapped Chief Sunday Kanu, a 72-year old uncle of the Chairman of Ukwa East Local Government Area, Mr Glory Kanu.
Reports say the hoodlums gained access into the Ohandu country home of the council boss in a red colour Jeep and took the septuagenarian to an unknown destination.
It was gathered that the abductors later called from their hide out and demanded a N20m ransom from relatives of the old man.
In a chat, the council boss, expressed dismay over the incident. He called on security agents in the state to step into the matter and ensure the release of his uncle.
He condemned the spate of kidnappings in the state and called on youths in the area to engage in useful activities rather than taking to crime.
